Retail and digital platforms

Engineering and modernisation of a nationwide enterprise commerce platform

The business-critical platform combined central commerce processes with the individual needs of several hundred affiliated retailers. I supported its evolution for many years – from hands-on backend engineering and project leadership to overall technology ownership.

Situation

The platform had to combine the shared processes of a large retail organisation with the individual requirements of several hundred affiliated retailers. Product data, content, pricing, availability and orders were provided centrally, while individual retailers retained control over their digital offering.

The system was business-critical, had evolved over many years and continuously faced new business, organisational and technical requirements.

What I worked on

I engineered central backend and platform components, designed interfaces and took ownership of bespoke extensions. As Technical Project Lead, I coordinated delivery across engineering, operations and stakeholders while leading and developing the backend team.

When I later assumed CTO responsibility, my scope expanded to technology strategy, architecture, engineering processes, team development, infrastructure, technical metrics and budgets. Hands-on work on central Java and .NET components remained a key part of my role.

Platform and architecture

The platform connected commerce, content management, search, customer and order processes with numerous internal and external systems. Established components were gradually modularised, central interfaces were redesigned and technical ownership became clearer.

Operations evolved from locally oriented infrastructure into a containerised cloud platform. Automated CI/CD processes, monitoring and observability improved delivery, transparency and responsiveness in production.

What changed

An established commerce application evolved into a platform with sustainable architecture and operational structures. Combining hands-on engineering, technical leadership and strategic ownership made it possible to advance business capabilities and technical modernisation in parallel.

Evolving responsibility

From Lead Developer to overall technology ownership.

As the platform evolved, so did my scope – from hands-on engineering and project leadership to technology strategy, organisation and operations.
